In his 45-year professional career, Paul Asbell has played and recorded with Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Howlin’ Wolf, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Paul Butterfield, Magic Sam, Earl Hooker, David Bromberg, Bobby McFerrin, Vermont-based jazz fusion and blues giants Kilimanjaro and the Unknown Blues Band, and many others. He began playing at age 12 on an acoustic guitar that his father had “broken in” backing pro-labor “people’s songs” at union rallies in the 1940s. Entirely self-taught, Paul’s earliest musical inspiration was drawn from his dad’s 78 rpm records by the likes of Lightnin’ Hopkins, Leadbelly, Uncle Dave Macon, and Jimmy Driftwood, as well as records by gospel greats such as Mahalia Jackson and The Staple Singers. Paul’s three solo acoustic CDs – Steel String Americana, Roots and Branches, and From Adamant To Atchafalaya – have received rave reviews in the national media for their fresh takes on blues and jazz standards, old-timey country tunes, and original compositions drawn from the “American roots” tradition.
