Hello Summer Youth Musical Actors and Families!

We are thrilled to begin the exciting process of planning this year’s Summer Youth Musical at Chandler - The Little Mermaid!

The play will run from July 12-14th.

We’re so excited you want to be a part of our production!

Our cast will consist of two groups, the Elementary Chorus, the Teen Chorus/Cast Leads.

The Elementary Chorus - for rising 1st graders through rising 6th graders. Elementary Chorus members will participate in three weeks of camp, from June 24-July 12, from 9:30-3:30, as well as all live performances (July 12-14). In Elementary Camp, young actors will learn theater skills through games and exercises, as well as songs and choreography for this year’s play. With a full day of camp, we’ll also get a chance to get outside in the community, with visits to the park and library, and arts and crafts activities with visiting artists.  NOTE: Elementary students are NOT required to submit audition materials.

The Teen Chorus and Cast Leads - for rising 7th graders through graduated seniors. All members of the Chorus and Leads will participate in three weeks of camp from June 24-July 12, as well as all performances (July 12-14). Teen campers will experience working with a professional director, music director and choreographer. All teen members of the cast must submit audition materials (see details below).

Because of all the interconnected logistics of producing a play of this magnitude, it is essential that our actors in all groups can commit to regular attendance for all three weeks of camp. All actors MUST be present for the full week of tech rehearsals (July 8-11). For the first two weeks of camp, a maximum of two absences is permitted. Further absences may result in an inability to perform in the show. Theater is truly a group effort, and everyone is important to the production!

Camp costs are:

$375 for Early Bird Registration (before March 31st)

$450 for Regular Registration (April 1-April 7)

REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS APRIL 7th. Participants who register after this date (space pending) will automatically be assigned to the chorus.

For any questions about registration or camp details, please contact April Lopez at youthmusical@chandler-arts.org

Note: Registration form and audition material may be submitted at separate times, as long as they both meet the April 7th deadline.

April Lopez

Producer

Producing credits include:

“Grease” Chandler Center for the Art Summer Youth Musical, AR Gurney's The Dining Room (Producer/Director) A Christmas Carol Dessert Theater-Radio Show, Just the Player Community Theater, Once Upon a Mattress, Bye Bye Birdie, Heartland Players Theatre Company, (Inland Theater League Award) Alice in Wonderland, Arts and Learning.

Serving both community and professional theater companies in different roles over the last few decades, April moved to Vermont for a much needed change, after working as a funeral arranger in southern California during the pandemic. Although she enjoys all of the different aspects of theater, character acting has always been her favorite contribution to the arts. Some of her favorite theater experiences include historical shows presented for students at Lifehouse Theater, acting at the awesome Legendary Productions, narrating Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker along with University of Redlands Symphony Orchestra and all things Redlands Bowl, Southern California’s oldest free outdoor venue with crowds up to 6,000 a night.. She can’t wait to see all the magic that the Chandler Stage brings to Randolph.

Joshua Huffman

Director

Joshua Huffman comes from Randolph, Vermont. He currently lives in Chicago and recently finished his MFA in the physical theatre practice of Embodied Dramaturgy from Columbia College Chicago. His practices include directing, acting, and devised theatre. He's currently working on storytelling through puppetry and is featuring this creative work in a festival through Arthaus Berlin in Berlin, Germany. This is his third summer youth musical as director for Chandler Center of the Arts. He's excited to continue working with central Vermont youth as they take the Chandler stage for the 25th year of the program.

Barbara "Babs" Mills

Stage Manager

Babs is very excited to be the Stage Manager of the phenom called “The
Youth Musical” for The Little Mermaid production. Hailing from NYC, Babs’
experience in theatre and backstage work came early in life when she was
part of a summer theatre experience for a number of years and was Props
assistant, Costume assistant and Assist Stage Manager. She has also
assisted in many productions throughout her theatre musings. Mostly an onstage actor and singer, this is her first full stint as Stage Manager in Vermont and is very excited to work with the whole theatre staff, directors, and children for this well-loved work. It is my hope that Chandler continues with their wonderful offerings of live theatre in this historic and beautiful venue. And that she can be an integral part of it. Please enjoy the show!!
