These two bands push the boundaries of string music — Canada’s genre-bending strings of The Fretless meet Sweden’s Scandinavian string masters, Väsen. Expect virtuosic playing, rich textures, and an electrifying fusion of tradition and innovation.
Juno Award–winning Canadian quartet The Fretless transforms fiddle tunes and folk melodies into intricate, high-energy arrangements that are rich, multi-layered, and uniquely percussive. Since their 2012 debut, they’ve earned international acclaim, toured the globe, and collaborated with powerhouse vocalists on their 2021 release Open House. Known for their infectious energy and expert musicianship, The Fretless captivates audiences from intimate venues to world-renowned concert halls.
For more than 37 years, Sweden’s Väsen — Mikael Marin and Olov Johansson — have honed a singular sound that combines playful precision with what seems like telepathic communication. Rooted in the traditional music of Uppland yet ever curious about new musical horizons, they weave intense, humorous, and deeply engaging performances. Playing instruments from the nyckelharpa to the electric viola, Väsen bridges centuries of tradition with modern sensibility, creating a musical language that feels both ancient and fresh.
Together, these two acclaimed ensembles promise an unforgettable night of string music without borders.
